Awesome Design Systems

The published design systems of dozens of real companies, in one list

A curated index of publicly documented design systems, from Apple and Google down to smaller product teams. The reason to keep it bookmarked is that reading how several serious teams solved the same problem is faster than reasoning about it alone.

How to actually use a list like this

Do not browse it. Arrive with a question, such as how many spacing steps are enough, or where a team draws the line between a badge and a tag, then read three systems on that one question. The convergence between them is your answer.

The systems that document their reasoning are worth more than the ones that only publish components. A rationale transfers to your product; a component library rarely does.

What not to take from it

Scale. These systems serve dozens of teams and years of legacy, which is why they have forty components and eleven type sizes. Copying that structure into a product with one team produces process for its own sake.

Take the decisions and the vocabulary, and leave the governance behind. A three person team that adopts a component review board has copied the cost of a large design system without any of the reason it exists.

Reach for it when

  • you need a defensible reason for a spacing or type decision
  • you are naming components and want the vocabulary everyone else uses
  • you want to see how a token layer is documented at scale

Watch out for

  • these systems are built for a scale you probably do not have
  • some linked systems are abandoned or have moved, as on every list of this kind
  • reading design systems is a very comfortable way to avoid designing anything
